The Magic of Show vs. Tell Mastermind

Every story needs the magic of Show vs. Tell to keep the reader reading ✨

And you already have that magic inside you.

Every good book shows, and every disengaging story tells.

In order to keep the reader reading, late into the night even, the author must know how to “show” the reader what’s happening in the story instead of “telling” them: talking down to them, describing in excruciating detail what the reader wants to discover for themselves.

The reader is the one engaging with the story. They want to live it, breathe it, have the characters come alive inside their heads for as long as the book lasts.

And when they’ve read the final page, the reader wants to remember those characters, hold them in their heart forever. Readers want to feel involved. Readers want to feel a connection.

Readers want the author’s story to change them.

Every author has this power inside them. That means if you’re writing a book, YOU HAVE THIS POWER INSIDE YOU. Every story has the potential to move people — you wouldn’t have been given your story if it wasn’t meant to change lives.

Introducing...

Meet Your Mentor, Melissa Frey

For years, I struggled to write my book. I knew how to tap into my intuition and follow the story, but I didn’t know much about the writing craft.

Then I discovered the concept of Show vs. Tell, and once I learned how to apply that to my writing (through a lot of trial and error), I was able to tell my story in a much more compelling way.

That’s what I want for you!

I created this Mastermind so that you can benefit from my years of trial and error and implement the magic of Show vs. Tell in your writing much more quickly than I did. But more importantly, I want to teach you how to tap into your own magic and write the book you were always meant to write.

FAQs

  • How long is The Magic of Show vs. Tell Mastermind?

Six weeks. The Magic of Show vs. Tell Mastermind consists of 6 live weekly sessions starting September 27th, 2021 and other bonus trainings.

  • Do I have to attend the live sessions to benefit from this Mastermind?

No! Although there will be a lot of action taking place during the live sessions, you can certainly watch the replays and participate on your own time. And I plan for the Facebook community to be active between sessions as well.

  • On what days are the livestreams planned?

The livestreams will be held at 5pm PDT (8pm EDT) on Mondays starting September 27th and ending on November 1st, 2021. Each session will last about an hour, but no longer than 2 hours, depending on the week.

I recommend you set aside 2 hours for every session — if the session ends a little early, you'll have built-in writing time!

There will also be bonus livestreams to round out your Mastermind experience!

    Here's the tentative schedule:
    - Monday, Sept. 27th, 5pm PT/8pm ET, The Power of Point of View
    - Monday, Oct. 4th, 5pm PT/8pm ET, The All-Consuming Magic of Show vs. Tell

    - Thursday, Nov. 5th, 5pm PT/8pm ET, End of Mastermind LIVE Celebration

  • Will I have access to the replays?

Absolutely! And you'll have lifetime access to them! I plan to post the replays in the membership area along with any other materials (if applicable) within 24 hours of each session.

  • What is your refund policy?

Because The Magic of Show vs. Tell Mastermind is a 6-week, live program, the nature of the Mastermind has elements of coaching and in-person help, and because your outcome will be based on your participation and attendance, I do not offer refunds at this time.

  • When is the last day to sign up?

Enrollment for the Mastermind will close on Monday, September 20th, 2021 at 11:59pm PDT. I do plan to offer this again in the future, so I will be opening up a waitlist for the next Mastermind soon afterward!

  • Can't I learn all of this from a writing craft book?

You could, but then you'll lack the support in actually implementing what you learn.

I know from experience that we don’t always know what’s “off” about our manuscripts, so we don’t know what book will help us fix it. As a seasoned writer, I will likely be able to spot these things at a glance and guide you toward the right resources. And once you take this course, you'll be able to spot issues much more easily yourself!

Plus, you'll have a community of fellow writers walking alongside you on this journey offering supporting and encouragement.

  • Isn't practice the best way to improve as a writer?

The more you practice writing, the more your writing will naturally improve. However, the skills you need to write the books you were meant to write aren't always obvious, and even if you figure them out, you may take years to discover where your gaps in knowledge are.

This Mastermind will help you identify what skills you need and teach you how to implement them in just six weeks. Plus, you'll have the support you need to really understand the concepts instead of just reading them in a book or taking years to figure them out for yourself.

In short, this Mastermind will get you where you want to go much faster.

  • Is this as good as taking a college course on writing?

This Mastermind will teach you everything you need to know to start writing and keep writing.

The truth is, you don’t need to spend thousands of dollars learning how to write. But investing in a few good mentors who can deliver feedback, structure, and guidance will help you become a better writer faster. This Mastermind is a great way to do that at an affordable level (and without the years of study!).

Plus, our group will be smaller than a college class, meaning you’ll get a higher level of personalized support and help!

Additional FAQs

  • Is The Magic of Show vs. Tell Mastermind right for me?

That's really up to you. Since you're on this page, something inside you probably thinks you're a good fit. Read through the sales page, reach out to me if you have additional questions, then listen to your gut.

I'd be honored to have you join us!

  • Is this just for fiction writers?

In short, yes. This Mastermind has been created specifically for fiction writers and will address storytelling topics largely applicable to fiction writing. I would not recommend this Mastermind for a writer wanting to make progress on a non-fiction book at this time.

  • What if I've never written a book?

That's great! This Mastermind is probably perfect for you. I do recommend you have, at a minimum, an idea for a story, however, to make the process go more smoothly.

Be aware that others in the group may have already made some progress on their book, but don't let that discourage you! We will all learn from each other.

  • Does it matter where I'm at in my book/manuscript?

Not at all! I designed the Mastermind to help you make meaningful progress on your book — whatever that looks like to you. Whether you just have an idea or you're stuck somewhere in the middle of your manuscript, this Mastermind will help if you do the work!

  • Will this work if I'm a plotter? How about a pantser? What if I don't know?

It will work no matter what your writing style! You can use this Mastermind to make progress on what's most helpful to you. If you'd like to work on an outline during the Mastermind and that constitutes meaningful progress to you, that's fine!

I designed this Mastermind to fit your needs and help you make significant progress in the area(s) most important to you.

  • Will I receive one-on-one help?

While I will not be doing one-on-one coaching sessions during the Mastermind, I do expect to offer personalized help to members who participate during the live sessions. This means you can receive help on your specific writing concerns/questions in a group setting! It was designed this way so we could all learn from each other.

  • Am I required to submit my writing for critique or ask questions?

No! Though I plan to make this option available to those who are interested, I do not require this of you, as this Mastermind is designed to give you the tools and inspiration to do the work yourself. Whatever help you need, I'm here to give it. If you don't have questions or don't feel comfortable sharing your writing in a group session, that's perfectly fine!

  • Is this only for beginner writers?

Not at all! We all get stuck from time to time, and there are always new things to learn on our writing journey. This Mastermind will lay the groundwork for your writing life then go deeper into the writing craft so you can master the concepts and write the amazing books you were meant to write.

  • What if I have other questions?
